Our Department
History

Department of Nutrition and Dietetics was founded in 1962 as “Dietetics” program within the structure of School of Health Sciences in order to conduct education and research activities in the field of Nutrition and Dietetics. This program is the first professional training in Nutrition and Dietetics at university level in Turkey.

When “Hacettepe School of Health Sciences” was reformed into “Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences” in 1963, the programme of Dietetics was restructured and became a department affiliated to the “School of Basic Health Sciences” of the Faculty. After the foundation of Hacettepe University in April 8, 1967, the department started to provide service within the structure of “Faculty of Health Sciences”.

For a while (1968-1976) the department was a part of the “School of Home Economics”, then separated in 1976 and affiliated to “School of Health Technology” together with the Department of Food Analysis and Technology and Institute of Food and Nutrition Sciences. After the affiliation of Department of Food Analysis and Technology to the Faculty of Engineering in 1977 and afterwards the Institute of Food and Nutrition Sciences was negated, the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics started to continue its educational programs, implementations and researches as the only unit of School of Health Technologies, by means of graduate and post-graduate education and training programmes.

Division of Nutritional Sciences, Dietetics, and Institutional Food Service Systems were established within the structure of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics in 1994; and Division of Community Nutrition in 2001. Each division developed their own postgraduate programs. In 2007, the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics was affiliated to the Faculty of Health Sciences founded with the resolution published in Official Gazette no. 26551.
